Glacier Country MapGlacier Country
Montana is fractured into two parts by the Continental Divide. Glacier Country is that area lying west of the mountain range. The area has pristine landscapes with towering peaks, small friendly communities, and vast wilderness areas.
The Bitterroot Valley's Bitterroot River provides classic fly fishing as well as hiking and horse back riding into the mountain canyons that surround the Valley. Waterfalls, scenic overlooks into the Selway Wilderness and Idaho are many. Great skiing at Lost Trail Powder Mountain will excite the winter enthusiast. The area's small population is friendly and even though they have a few extra stop lights in downtown Hamilton, you will still find the trip relaxing with plenty of rooms to explore.

The Northern Region Summary
The Northern Region National Forest Map is one of the best illustrations of just how little private property there is in western Montana. Nations Parks, National Forests, Wilderness areas dominate the ownership. National Refuges, Recreation Areas, and Indian Reservations comprise almost all the rest. Just the areas that are featured in white are available for purchase - small ribbons of land that offer the best of mountain living in the West!

National Forest Service MapA Legacy of Wild lands
Wilderness and wild places are words that stir our souls, that bring us back to America's beginnings. In the 1960's Congress understood their importance and acted to preserve many wild places as wilderness or wild and scenic rivers. Much of the Northern Region remains remote and wild today. Five million acres are preserved within the Wilderness System and seven rivers are part of the Wild and Scenic Rivers System.
